The iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles was originally an ad for the hill's biggest real estate company, Hollywoodland. The sign lost the "LAND" in 1949, when the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce began a contract with the City of Los Angeles Parks Department to repair and rebuild the sign. The contract stipulated that "LAND" be removed to spell "Hollywood" and reflect the district, not the "Hollywoodland" housing development.

The Singapore Flyer under construction. These two wheels would later become the third and second largest observation wheels on the planet, at 441ft and 541ft respectively, with the latter just falling shortly behind the High Roller (550ft) in Las Vegas.

On the left, geophysicist and Manhattan Project participant Francis Birch marks the bomb unit that would become the “Little Boy” atomic bomb, while Norman Ramsey, who would later win the Nobel Prize in Physics, looks on. This is one of the few photographs where the inside of the atomic bomb can be seen.

The “Fat Man” atomic bomb is loaded onto a transport trailer and given a final once-over before being transported and loaded up onto the aircraft, that would eventually be dropped over Nagasaki, marking the second documented usage of nuclear weapons in warfare.

The mushroom cloud from the "Fat Man" atomic bomb dropped over Nagasaki on 9th August 1945, taken at ground level. The blast killed 35,000-40,000 instantly, and eventually a total of 60,000-80,000 fatalities will occur, mostly from the long-term health effects such as cancer and leukemia.

On the evening of July 7, 2017, at the conclusion of the regularly scheduled international passenger flight from Toronto to San Francisco, Air Canada Flight 759 (circled in red) nearly landed on a taxiway which already had four fully loaded and fueled airplanes (one of which is circled in blue) holding short for takeoff. The pilots had come close to causing the deadliest aviation disaster in all of history.
